It was revealed today that eBay will offer its first collection of NFTs in cooperation with web3 platform OneOf as part of its foray into the NFT industry. As part of a new “Genesis” NFT Collection from the brand, Sports Illustrated cover stars will be brought to life in 3D and animated form. As the collectibles market grows, eBay has announced its first-ever collaboration in the NFT sector.
Wayne Gretzky, a Canadian hockey legend, will be the subject of the inaugural NFT collection, which goes on sale today. Digital collectibles in the form of green, gold, platinum, and diamond-tier NFTs are part of the 13-item collection. Priced between $10 and $20, each NFT shows Gretzky doing a famous maneuver in 3D. Athletes from other sports will be featured in future collections that will be released by eBay throughout the year.
This relationship with OneOf will allow eBay customers everywhere to get their hands on the most sought-after NFTs, Dawn Block, the vice president of collectibles and electronics at eBay, said in a statement. As a part of our commitment to the eBay community, we will continue to supply high-quality, high-value items.”
eBay’s announcement last year that it will welcome NFTs and provide new capabilities that bring blockchain-driven collectibles to its platform meant that today’s launch was not entirely unexpected. Since there are currently so many crypto-native NFT marketplaces out there, eBay will find it difficult to maintain its current market share against them.
NFTs are currently being considered by a rising number of organizations, including eBay. This week, Instagram revealed that it will begin testing NFTs with a small group of handpicked content creators in the US. A new tool that allows artists to promote their NFTs on their profiles was also disclosed by Spotify last week.
